Fiona's LettersTAFE Motor Mechanic Training Course for Girls Week Fifteen Hi Everyone! Ack! I can't believe it's June already! What happened to the first half of the year - I remember Christmas.........the rest is a blur. We did more on vehicle servicing this week and I was able to use our car for an exercise on brakes. And just as well! New tyres were fitted on all four wheels last July and, thankfully, I have never had cause to remove any of the wheels since. Thankfully because if I had been unfortunate enough to get a flat tyre, there is no way I would have been able to change it. Not that I don't know how but the wheel nuts were done up so tightly it took a breaker bar and a 5 foot length of pipe over that to undo them. The teacher, who confesses to weighing around 85kg, actually stood on the wheel brace (which measures about 2' long) and bounced up and down with no effect at all. He was surprised the workshop who did them up didn't snap the wheel studs off. So be aware, people: if your mechanic has cause to remove and replace a wheel, make sure he hasn't done it up so tightly you need a circus strong man and his elephant to undo the wheel nuts! Wednesday was great fun - we got to sharpen tools with the bench-grinder! After a quick demo, we were given a box of screwdrivers, chisels, drill bits, drifts and punches to either sharpen or take off the rough edges, developed during use. Sparks flew everywhere - the best way to wind down after a stressful day at the office. Also handy for trimming pesky toenails and any sharp bits on your teeth. I might get one of these grinders for trimming the cat's claws - I'm sure he wouldn't mind. More tests this week but passed OK - phew! The end is in sight now and I won't have to worry about homework or tests for a while :) Have a good week and I'll catch you again next Monday! Cheers! Fi xx ;) |
