Fiona's Letters

TAFE Motor Mechanic Training Course for Girls

Week Six

Hi All,

It's that time of the week again :)

Well, I feel we made real progress this week.

Instead of the usual wolf-whistles from the boys whenever the class has to

move through the workshop we actually scored a full-blooded, "SHOW US

YER TITS!!" from one of the many intellectuals.

This was followed by an even louder, deeper and more mature voice

bellowing,

"WHO WAS THAT!!!" before the appropriate discipline was doled out to our

biggest fan.

Alas, we didn't get to meet the president of our fan-club as many of us would

have loved to have expressed our gratitude for his appreciation. As we all

know, a little flattery goes a loooong way :) And here I was thinking we were

covering sexual harassment next week!

But seriously, the whistles are getting to be an annoyance - like those pesky

key-finder tags that are supposed to beep when you whistle for your hidden

keys but continue to beep incessantly whenever you play the radio in the car.

After a while you just feel like ripping the batteries out and flinging them out

the window.

That's about the level I'm referring to - not particularly high but enough to

make you feel like doing something destructive to the offending noisemaker.

They'd better be careful for when we're all PMSing - it could get ugly. And

one of us is menopausal as well - hahahahahaha

We had a test on Monday on basic engine principals and another quick quiz on

identifying the basic parts of a manual clutch. The results are given out

tomorrow but I felt I did fairly well and didn't leave the class room feeling

worrisome over any particular questions. Being the cynic I am, this could

mean I either did really, really well or I've crashed and burned in a manner

spectacular! Fingers crossed, it's the former and not the latter.

We had our second lesson on electrical basics on Friday. I'm managing to

bluff my way through this so far and having horrible flashbacks to high school

physics classes. Even the teacher is asking for my opinion on his descriptions

of things to make sure he's on the right track - yea gods!!

Especially after his failed attempt at an Ohm's Law equation went horribly

wrong and couldn't work out why his answer was completely crazy.

It's a long story.............

Next lesson - which will not be this week, unfortunately, because it's Good

Friday - we will be building some basic circuits complete with switches and

diodes, etc. Better than drawing pictures of them!

I have been checking the NRMA web site to see if there is a story on us yet

(after their visit last week) but I haven't seen anything so far. I will let you

know when that appears and you can check it out. In the meantime, we did get

a quick blurb in the local paper in Blacktown.

OK, until next week, have fun and don't even think of bringing your car over

for me to look at! Not yet, anyhow.

Cheers!

Fi xx ;)
