TAFE Motor Mechanic Training Course for Girls

Week Nine

Hello Faithful Newsletter Readers,

Week 9 and heading into the second half already.

It doesn't feel like 9 weeks have been completed - I must be having too much

fun.

Drum roll, please...........(c'mon - use your imagination!)

Miracle of miracles - I start work experience tomorrow!

So a big thank you to everyone for their positive vibes, words of

encouragement and offers of contacts if needed. Also, a very special thanks

must go to my good friend, Brett, who kindly gave me a top rate backpack so

I don't need to juggle all my stuff to and from the car and classroom

everyday. If anyone is on the market for an excellent backpack for school, I

can recommend the RackPak - it's certainly far better than a lot of the ones

I've seen for sale in the stores. (OK, gratuitous product endorsement shall end

now).

But back to the work experience thing - I ended up calling David at the

Kenthurst Caltex on Monday afternoon and he apologised for not calling back

sooner but I was more than welcome to start on Monday morning for 2 weeks.

He did ask, though, if I was OK about getting a bit dirty and having to work

with boys.

As long as I don't have to get dirty with.........OK, let's not go there, shall we?

Err, no - I don't think I have a problem with grease or having to work along

side blokes but thanks for asking, anyway :)

He seems to be a pretty down to earth kinda guy but a little nervous about

having a female around the workshop - hopefully, he'll feel a little more at

ease by the end of the week.

Anyhow, I'll be riding my bike to and from - about a 10k round trip - so that

will be a new experience!

I had a trial run on Saturday and made it OK - it's either that or walk and I

don't fancy that much.

All right - this week's absentee excuse - toothache.

A rare, 24 hour toothache that was in no particular tooth.

We're still getting assessments but some have been practical ones this time.

Last week's steel plate project was finished off and I got equal top marks with

another classmate.

I was pretty happy since I had to do some creative filing to fix a couple of

faults with mine but it looked the goods for the final marking and that's what

counted.

Then we went on to making bolts (not for the door) from a plain piece of steel

rod. We made a tread at both ends, of different sizes, and then corresponding

bolt holes in a carbon steel block using the bench drills.

(Mmmm, power tools).

One of the threads on the bolt was bashed with a hammer and I then had to fix

it - no drama there, either. Finally, one of the bolt holes had to be bored out

and a replacement thread (helicoil) had to be fitted.

Next lesson - after work experience - we have to screw the bolt into the hole

and hacksaw it off so it can't be taken out easily. We'll be using a tool called

an "eziout" to remove that.

We also had more tests on steering and suspension systems - the results of

which will be given out when TAFE resumes again. Again, I managed to

finish those without feeling I'd botched them so, fingers crossed.

For those of you who have been wondering - my hands are still clean and

don't look any different from when I was in the office every day. However, as

of tomorrow, that may all change and I will have to stop biting my nails

because the taste will be awful. Unless I develop a taste for grease...............

which I seriously doubt.

Well, here goes for tomorrow so think of me as you ease into your padded

office chair and check your e-mails - I will be on my back with the boys.

(There's one hell of a rumour to start!!)

Until next week - cheers!

Fi xx ;)
